Beautiful find Mary! I do agree with jamiewgoodspeed that this is a Common Snapping Turtle. One way to tell the difference is to look at the shell. Alligator Snapping Turtles have more distinct ridges on the shell. Here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_snapping_turtle
