Description:

Watch the video!!! This sea lion used its body to trap fish in a small pool. Many birds tried to take full advantage of the situation - including brown pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and brown noddies :-)

What a cool video, must have been great to experience that in real life. The poor sealion must be so frustrated trying to keep the fish to itself!

Thanks CDF - I wasn't sure of the identity of that late comer - I had thought it might have been a lava gull so thanks for giving a proper ID :-) I was amazed at how bold the birds were - particularly the three blue-footed boobies that were willing to dive right in within reach of the sea lion! Clearly sea lions prefer "fish"over "duck" :-)

This video is absolutely fabulous, Doug! The Sea Lion seems to know exactly what s/he is doing... Also, note at the very end, as the Sea Lion removes him/herself and lets go whatever fish might have survived the carnage, an additional actor, a Striated Heron, running in from below/left, - but he is too late to benefit! - Well done!!! - Look at facebook.com/darwinfoundation for info re science on GLP.
