Description:
Family: Balsaminaceae.
Identifying Himalayan balsam
- grows up to 2 metres high
- reddish coloured stems
- dark green, lance-shaped leaves with jagged edges
- flowers from June to October
- large, brightly coloured flowers that are usually in variable shades from purple to pale pink
- has explosive seed pods
Habitat:
You often see it along the banks of a river. It also grows very well in gardens.
Notes:
It is considered a weed. Invasive. The seeds are edible. You can smell from afar that these plants are growing here. They have a very distinctive smell (i.m.o.).
