Field Notes

Description:

Accipiter-type bird of prey with a long rounded tail, larger head, compared to its very near twin--Sharp-shinned Hawk. These are relatively small birds-of-prey that can easily fly through trees seeking smaller birds, sometimes at backyard feeders.

Habitat:

Usually spotted flying above tree tops and resting/perched on tree branches. I thought it was strange to find this one on the beach, possibly eating a pigeon. There happened to be over a dozen Rock Pigeons on the pier.

Notes:

Spotted on Tybee Island, GA's East beach. I was going to the beach to try to spot Purple Sandpipers or Lesser Black-backed Gulls and found neither, when I spotted the Cooper's devouring its lunch about 20 feet off of the boardwalk. Nature is not kind.
