Field Notes

Description:

Lily family. It has orange funnel-shaped flowers. Plant is 2 to 4 ft. tall.
The day lily looks like the wood lily, but it doesn't have purplish-brown spots.

Habitat:

roadsides and meadows

Notes:

Day lilies were spotted along the road on Hwy. 29 near North Cotton Lake Road. This native of Eurasia was introduced to our gardens and has escaped from cultivation. Each flower lasts only one day. Every part of the plant is mild and edible, the flower buds taste like green beans when cooked and served with butter.
