Field Notes

Description:

Family:Araneidae (orb weavers) Genus: Araneus. Length: 1.75 inches with legs outstretched ( 44.45 mm) Largest Shamrock I have found to date. Female. White abdomen with 4 dimples. Red, white and black striped legs. Actively making or repairing web just after dark. Large circular web at least 3 feet across. Non-venomous. Non-aggressive.

Habitat:

Meadow with abundant weeds and flowers.

Notes:

Coloring is variable, but I believe this is the first red, white and black stripe legs I have seen. Mostly have seen black and white stripes.
