Field Notes

Description:

Agaric mushrooms. Split cap that had a dark reddish colour, and large pale pinkish gills. Stipe smooth but had a veined appearance. Approx. 6 cms in height, and cap approx. 8-10 cms in diameter. Some specimens stood alone whilst others grew in clusters. Obviously not fresh specimens, so shape and colour has obviously changed over time. Perhaps species is something like Russula clelandii, although the specimens in this spotting have tight gills.

Habitat:

Well-shaded area in mowed grass under Norfolk Island Pines. Seaside location with moist salty air.
