Field Notes

Description:

Family: Erebidae, Subfamily: Arctiinae, Tribe: Arctiini. (Tiger Moths) Length: 1.25 inches long (32 mm). Late instar. Found 3. Feeds only on milkweed. Serious pest. Monarchs will not feed on milkweed nor lay eggs if this caterpillar is already on the host plants. Color: Orange, black and white with long tufts of hair.

Habitat:

Near woodlands on a country road. Also fields and meadows wherever host plant (milkweed) is found.

Notes:

Photos 1-3 are all different caterpillars.
