West Indian Manatee
Trichechus manatus
28.9025, -82.5926
Field Notes
Description:
Mother and calf. They came up right next to my kayak. Manatees are very friendly and curious, often rubbing up on kayaks or even people they encounter
Habitat:
These manatees were originally attracted to the area because of the warm waters from the power plant. They go up the freshwater rivers to our springs, which stay close to 72 degrees year-round. Our community had to fight to protect the springs they stay in during the winter, as a developer proposed building condos around it.
