Field Notes

Notes:

After spotting these beautiful butterflies, I learnt that they lay their eggs in the Kalanchoe plant. I tracked down the sole Kalanchoe [in the terrace of my house] and with it the caterpillars feeding on the plant. I searched thoroughly to find an egg, but unfortunately all the eggs have been transformed to caterpillars.
Here, I would like to make a confession, before, I used to kill these caterpillars thinking that they would destroy the plant. I would never dare to do it unless they tend to threat the existence of the only Kalanchoe plant in the neighbourhood. I hope it will be for their own good.

Hi Sckel, I was also amazed when I found out about the caterpillars feeding on the Kalanchoe plant. The species in our house is Kalanchoe pinnata. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalanchoe_pinnata http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Starr_070308-5336_Kalanchoe_pinnata.jpg
Hi, namitha. You know the scientific name of this species of kalanchoe? I have two species of kalanchoe in my house, and never saw any insects feeding of leaves or flowers. So I thought the succulent leaves of Kalanchoe were bad for the insects.
Thank you so much!!. They are very common around here. I have seen a lot of them. Maybe they are seen commonly around this Kalanchoe plant ["chodakku chedi"].
Good shot!!! These butterflies are found in Kerala??? Haven't seen those before.
