Field Notes

Description:

The King Cobra is the longest venomous snake in the world. Its range is all across the Western Ghats in India and the North East. The snake avoids any confrontation/interaction with humans, but when threatened, it is extremely aggressive.

Notes:

This male King Cobra rested by the side of the forest path on a very rainy day, right outside the bushes - 10 feet long, a rich brown, his scales glistening with raindrops, body all curved up as if to camouflage the inimitable length. He had devoured a heavy meal the previous evening and didn't seem too keen to move, he just kept a watchful eye. This is my first ever and only sighting of a King Cobra in the wild. In all my imagination, I had envisioned the King to be a spectacular snake, but nothing could have prepared me for this sighting. Goose bumps. Fear. Respect.
