Field Notes

Description:

Achatina fulica (Férussac, 1821), the East African Land Snail, or Giant African Land Snail, is a species of large, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Achatinidae.

Habitat:

Backyard.

Notes:

Achatina fulica is considered one of the worst snail pests of tropic and subtropic regions. It consumes large volumes of native plants, modifies habitats and out-competes native snails (Moore 2005). While its small size limits the quantity of plant material consumed per animal the aggregated nature of the infestations can lead to severe damage in infested plants (Raut & Barker 2002). - http://www.issg.org/database/species/reference_files/achful/achful_imp…

This species was brought to Brazil for being bred as a food specialty (escargot), now it is a real pest, devastating plants and destroying environmental balance.
You are so correct beaker98! They're munching their way in every plant that we have!
Wonderful photos! Sounds like quite the unwanted visitor however!
