Field Notes

Description:

My husband and I just bought our first house last August and this bush is in the back corner of our yard. I was hoping someone could help me identify it. In August when we moved in, it had leaves and some buds and then one flower. It's now almost June and nothing is happening with it, no leaves or flowers or anything so I'd like to know what it is so I know how to take care of it or if it needs anything. I did some research when we moved in and thought it was some kind of Magnolia. Thanks for any help!

Species ID Suggestions

Yes I agree but we are headed in the right direction at least :)
Not a "for sure" identification, Lindsy, but seems like a really good candidate.
@suzmonk Thank you so much, It's nice to know what it is. I may try some manure and see if that helps. @brycegarling I live in Omaha, NE are winter was really really cold and windy but not a lot of snow or ice.
You may very well be right. Took a quick look online. Magnolia 'Ann' is an M. Liliiflora hybrid ... I kind of suspected it. I'm sending you a link from Missouri Botanical Gardens that seems to hit a couple of true notes. As your link also noted, Magnolia 'Ann' is a late bloomer ... and it's also known to put out the odd late flower during the summer. And it's meant to be "shrubby." Here's the link, hope it's helpful ... http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=d422
@brycegarling thank you, I was sure it needed some type of "food" but since I've been unsure of what it was exactly I wan't sure how to proceed, Thank you for you're advice.
When I first researched it this is what I think it is http://www.bluegrassgardens.com/product=tbr01-ann-magnolia-tree=magnolia-ann.htm but It's so odd that it didn't bloom in Spring as there's no activity, growth leaves or anything.
@suzmonk thank you for the suggestion, I'm sure it's some type of Magnolia but it's so weird it should have bloomed in early spring and it never did. There was only that one random bloom in August when we moved in. I may have to do that because I'd really like to know how to take care of it or if there's anything it needs since it's acting so oddly. Like I said it's almost June and it never bloomed and there are no leaves or buds of leaves, just some of those fuzzy buds all over but they haven't opened. I appreciate the help.
Hi, LindsyCarranza. Yes, it looks like a Mulan/Japanese magnolia ... Magnolia liliiflora. Or a M. liliiflora hybrid. But I can't think why there would be buds or flowers in August. It's an early spring bloomer ... actually blooms on the bare branch before leaves emerge. And it's usually a tree, not a bush, but that may just be a matter of pruning. So, I dunno ... maybe take some photos to a local horticulturist, see what they say?
