Field Notes

Description:

Family: Noctuidae. Subfamily: Noctuinae. Tribe: Noctuini (Darts) Although the word "underwing" is in the common name it is NOT an Underwing Moth of the family Erebidae. Length: 30-35 mm. Wingspan: 50-60 mm. FW varies from pale tan to sooty brown. Reniform spot if filled with gray and black scales. Black subapical patch is always present. Hindwing is golden yellow with black terminal band. Hosts: Various grasses and low plants.

Habitat:

Woodlands, meadows, fields, gardens, lawns. (Came to light)

Notes:

An introduced European species. Serious pest damaging plants in the larval stage.
