Field Notes

Description:

Black wasp with red abdomen. Long ovipositor. Wings longer than body. Female.

Habitat:

Found on a beautyberry bush on the edge of a mixed forest.

Notes:

I took a number of pics of this wasp with wings covering it's abdomen. Then I looked at it again and it folded it's wings down exposing it's bright red abdomen. It stayed in this position for several minutes. I wonder if this is a way to attract mates?

Species ID Suggestions

I think you're right Livan. Thanks.
I am guessing this: https://bugguide.net/node/view/359406 but as you can see seems to be difficult to ID to species from photos.
