Field Notes

Description:

Weevil of about 2 cm covered in tiny white spots. I picked him up........bad mistake! He's got vicious spines on the legs :(
Family Cuculionidae, Subfamily Dryophthorinae, Tribe Rhynchophorini.

Habitat:

On a bush, forest and secondary growth under the San Cristobal Bridge on the Highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 15, 1,500 meters.

Reinvestigated: This safely is Rhodobaenus pustulosus (Gyllenhal, 1838). All similar species are more slender, or less big (usually: both).
