Field Notes

Description:

Waxy grey cap is shiny and reflective when wet. Largest cap is about 3 in. wide. Gills radiate toward the point of connection.

Habitat:

Spotted on a fallen log next to a creek at Dash Point State Park.

Notes:

Research has shown that Panellus serotinus possesses anti-tumor and immuno-modulating activities, like many medicinal mushrooms (Kim et al., 2012). This is primarily due to its concentration of beta-glucans, which can easily be extracted through prolonged hot water decoctions (teas, soups).
