Snake with mottled brown and black pattern, about 2 feet long.

Habitat:

Foothills of mountains near Los Angeles.

Possibly a young gopher snake or a night snake, but I can't say for sure. Here is a site that helps with ID'ing patterned snakes in California: http://www.californiaherps.com/identification/snakesid/patternedsnakes.html
