Field Notes

Description:

Blue Button is a marine organism consisting of a colony of hydroids. It is a unique kind of jellyfish. The blue button lives on the surface of the sea and consists of two main parts: the float and the hydroid colony. The hydriod colony has tentacles that resemble that of a jellyfish. The blue button sting is not powerful but may cause irritation to human skin. It has a single mouth located beneath the float, which is used for both the intake of prey and the expulsion of wastes.

Habitat:

It is found in tropical and sub-tropical waters of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans.

Notes:

I was walking by the edge of the sea at low tide when this little fellow washed up on the shore. It looked lifeless as it floated around the edge of the shore, every time a wave came by. I poked it softly with a twig and it did turn out to be dead.
