Field Notes

Description:

White polka dot thorax, typical of danainae. Brown underside with white spots, the lower female heavily striped. Wing top side (not shown) has a dazzling metallic blue around the wing tips. This blue is generally seen while in flight, as the wings are usually closed at rest.

When the butterfly lands, you have two or three seconds to catch a top side shot, as the butterfly opens and closes the wings two or three times before closing permanently.

Habitat:

Adjacent to a small stream. Altitude 1000m.

Notes:

The beauty of mating shots is that it solves a lot of identification problems when the two genders look quite different.
