Description:
The European earwig is about 0.5-0.75 inch long, with banded legs and reddish head. The common name comes from a European superstition that these insects enter people’s ears when they are asleep and then bore into the brain. Females care for their eggs and the newly hatched nymphs until they molt for the first time.

Notes:
Startled when I lifted the lid on a firewood container that I hadn't opened in a while. I find these to be interesting but creepy-looking insects.
