Wow, thank you BugEric! I used to see these when I was a kid in/around NY but for the life of me could not think of what we called them (still cannot) so didn't have a starting point. This is one of the several little bug-a-boos that were active on my garden gate one day. All seemed to be there because of the ant/lacewing larva drama that was going on ( http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/37091007 ) I got the impression that this guy was hoping for the opportunity to swoop in and do something, but never really got the chance.
Nice find! This is a genus of ant mimics.
