Field Notes

Description:

This darter is some 4 to 5 cm in length, and shows globally red appearance, with black lines underneath the abdomen and blackish dots on last two segments of abdomen. It is difficult to be absolutely certain about the species ID, as Sympetrum species are quite lookalike (to me) - but it seems that a rather yellow-brownish panels on thorax, and black legs, point more toward Common Darter...

Habitat:

Seen in shrubby vegetation in coastal heaths of Brittany, France; these heaths are part of another protected area that also include some saline marshes.

Notes:

Please note that the pic N° 2 was taken by my son; and he agreed to use it here.
