Field Notes

Description:

Huge moth, almost as big as my hand. Plump furry body. My photos unfortunately don't show the most distinctive feature, large purple eyespots on the back of the hind wings (which are the reason for its name, after the Cyclops in the Odyssey). I think this is a female, since it has a very stout body and lacks the extra bushy antennae.

Habitat:

Found resting on a drainpipe outside church building. Lots of trees surround the area.

Notes:

First Polyphemus moth I'd ever seen. So exciting!
