Field Notes

Description:

Small, orange-red orb-weaver spider about 1 cm long resting on a citrus leaf. It has white blotches in a linear arrangement on the top of the abdomen. "A nocturnal orbweaver that is variable in color and somewhat variable in shape, too."

Habitat:

Orange tree in backyard. "Southwestern United States: mainly southern border of California and Arizona, but also the extreme south of Texas. Also continues south into Peru and Brazil."

I wonder how it's mouth looks. Is it like that of a Praying Mantis?
Apparently this spider actually isn't new-to-me but it sure looks different! I received an ID from BugGuide today saying it's a spider I see all the time in my backyard but the markings are very different! Thank you for the ID suggestion, C.Sydes and the comment, Emma :)
