Field Notes

Description:

Definitely not 100% on my ID. Anyone with a correction will be hugely appreciated! [UPDATE... thanks Whatsthatbug.com for the correction!)

Large shiny almost deep reddish-brown- black beetle. About 2" long. Formidable mandibles which it seemed more than willing to use. Long antennae.. Each perhaps 1 inch long.

Discovered upside down in the middle of the hallway at the Science center where I work.

Habitat:

In the middle of the city! Although there is a large park right outside the door, with a pond and several magnificent old Live Oak trees and other ornamental trees and plantings.
