We can't be 100% certain about the species ID without seeing its gonopods (modified legs for sperm transfer on males), but based on the location it's probably A. tigana and we can safely say that it's Apheloria, so I agree with stho002.

I agree that, since this species occurs in North Carolina, that's what it probably is. But I'm struck with the similarity between it and the Yellow-spotted millipede (Harpaphe haydeniana) that we have in Oregon: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/23320083
