Field Notes

Description:

This is an Owl butterfly, the first of many I saw in Costa Rica. They fly at dawn and dusk, only a few meters at a time, so they are easy to follow. They like to be in banana plantations and lay their eggs on banana plants.

Habitat:

They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central, and South America.

Notes:

And now for the butterflies of Costa Rica!
