Field Notes

Description:

Size: Grows to a length of around 8mm.
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Months seen: July to October
Food: Flies and small insects
Special features: The female common orb weaver is a pale yellow-brown colour. The abdomen features brown markings which resemble a leaf pattern.
The name comes from the orb-shaped (rounded) webs this spider spins.
The male of the species has a slimmer abdomen, longer legs and darker markings. During the mating season the male moves onto the web of the female.

Habitat:

Found amongst any vegetation or structure where it can build its web.
