Emily, these are easily confused. This is a true bug and not a beetle. Beetles (order = coleoptera) have mandibles; true bugs (order = hemiptera) have sucking mouth-parts. Beetles have strong elytra; true bugs have soft wings. Beetles undergo metamorphosis from grub; not for bugs which have young nymph that look similar to adults.
