Rocky Mountain Mule Deer (juvenile)

The mule deer is indigenous to western North America and was named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule. This spotting is a juvenile and reflects the coloration and markings designed to help ensure its survival. Fawns are born scentless - this coupled with the distinctive markings help conceal it from the view of predators because many of them possess only black and white vision.
