Field Notes

Description:

The mule deer is indigenous to western North America and was named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule. This spotting is a juvenile and reflects the coloration and markings designed to help ensure its survival. Fawns are born scentless - this coupled with the distinctive markings help conceal it from the view of predators because many of them possess only black and white vision.

Habitat:

Found west of the Missouri River, predominantly in the Rocky Mountain region. This particular spotting was on Fishercap Lake, just off the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail, in the Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park.
