Description:
This was a large specimen. Some of the limbs were almost 3 meters long (pic 3). Typically this spreading shrub will grow to about 2 meters. The leaves are fan shaped and studded with resin glands. The red berries are edible, though known to be rather tasteless.
Habitat:
Spotted near the Umtanum Creek in eastern Washington. Sagebrush steppe habitat with Ponderosa pine nearby in the canyons. 2000 ft. Found in western North America.
Notes:
The Zuni people use the berries of the pedicellare variety as food, and eat the leaves with uncooked mutton fat or deer fat.
