Field Notes

Description:

Large woodpeckers with iridescent green-black backs, pink undersides, gray breasts and collars, and red faces rimmed with black. Males and females look alike. Pic 2 shows its needle-like tongue. Pic 6 shows it gathering wood chips which it uses to line its nest.

Habitat:

Spotted in Klickitat County, Washington State at the Catherine Creek Day Use Area. Mostly oak forest.

Notes:

Ranges in the western United States. Unlike most other woodpeckers Lewis's woodpecker will use the "hawking method" for catching flying insect prey.
