Field Notes

Description:

A bright green and black tropical rainforest butterfly mating with the larger black and white female. The body of birdwing (ornitho - ptera) butterflies are very large and bright yellow.

Habitat:

On display at the Melbourne zoo tropical butterfly enclosure.

Notes:

Slightly different from the New Guinea species, this one has more yellow color on the underwings. There are two species in Australia. This image is taken at the Melbourne zoo

All birdwing butterflies are listed by CITES as endangered and any export for souvenir specimens or zoos need permits. Being very popular in insect trade, farming is well established. Most birdwing species are common but a few are rare.
