Field Notes

Description:

A large black bird with red eyes and dark slightly curved bill. When in flight, large white patches are seen in the wings giving the bird its name.
A flock of about 8 choughs were spotted foraging in the grass.

Habitat:

Spotted in a small flock under Apple Box Eucalyptus trees.

Notes:

These birds spent most of their time running from one area to another- an interesting sight. They only took flight when harassed by a magpie but landed a short distance away.
Their eyes are said to swell-up and become a brighter red when the bird is excited.

The Australian Chough belongs to the family of mud-nest builders, Corcoracidae and is only distantly related to the European Choughs.
