Description:

Boletus campestris Smith & Thiers Cap 3-5cm across, broadly convex; deep rose red to blood when young, paler, browner with age; dry, velvety, often cracking. Tubes 6-8mm deep, depressed at the stem, bright lemon yellow then greenish yellow, bruising blue. Pores 1-2 per mm, round to angular; same color as tubes. Stem 40-50 x 5-l0mm, equal; yellow at apex, reddish below, base with bright yellow tomentum. Flesh bright yellow bruising blue-green. Odor pleasant. Taste pleasant. Spores inequilateral long ellipsoid, 11-14 x 4.5-6µ. Deposit olive-brown. Habitat gregarious in short grass in lawns and woodland edges. Found widely distributed in eastern North America. Season June-September. Edible.

Habitat:

Open hardwoods; grassy area under post oaks.

Notes:

Summer Red Caps latin name is Boletus fraternus which is slightly different from Boletus campestris; it has more red on the stem.
