Longbodied Cellar Spider with prey
Pholcus phalangioides
33.0067, -117.053
Field Notes
Description:
Daddy Longlegs about 6mm long caught a western honeybee in its web. It would drop down to the struggling bee and make a couple wraps of silk around it and then retreat. It did this several times after it bit the bee. The bee started jerking in a different way, I assume involuntarily due to the spider bite. Eventually the spider stayed with the bee whose movement slowed to finish wrapping it up.
Habitat:
Backyard under porch light at night. It was between the ground and the house under the eve. This species is very common and can be found throughout the world.
