Field Notes

Description:

This meadowhawk dragonfly is about 30--35 mm (1.2 to 1.4 in) in length. The wings are clear with a yellowish patch near the base of the hindwings. The legs are yellow. Mature males are predominantly red while immature males and females are more brown to yellow.

Habitat:

Meadows, edges of wetlands and forests, but often open areas far from water.

Notes:

Meadowhawks are notoriously difficult to ID in our area as they tend to have very similar characteristics. The Autumn Meadowhawk, however, is the only meadowhawk in our area with yellow legs.
