Red Spider Lily
Lycoris radiata
35.0994, -92.4664
Field Notes
Description:
The Red Spider Lily is back to welcome us into autumn! Shown are various stages of bloom and the bulbs of the plant. They have taken to the warm climates of the US east of the rockies, but these perennial beauties are originally from Asia and are the stuff of many myths and legends--many of them surrounding death. Speaking of which, be careful, as the bulbs of these flowers are very poisonous.
Habitat:
A thick cluster found blooming in our shaded backyard. Mixed forest, residential area. We have not lived in this house long, but these do not look organized or intentionally planted.
