Habitat:

Next to drying pond on mountain airfield with scattered trees and bushes at around 3,700'. Sun-bleached arid ground with hardy thistles and other plants.

Malcolm, I believe this is a ringlet, Erebia sp. There are numerous candidates for this area and habitat :-( I'm unable to say much more without a dorsal view. See what others say!
