Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Polioptila caerulea
40.5166, -105.177
Field Notes
Description:
Small blue-gray bird, very active
Habitat:
Colorado Front Range foothills; hilly, naturalized, suburban/rural yard with mostly deciduous trees and tall grasses
Notes:
This pair nested on a branch 10 feet over our deck and 10 feet from our front door. They were entertaining to watch, from nest building to constant food gathering and raising their brood. After the first brood fledged, they started a second nest further out in the same tree, but either wind or another bird species (possibly orioles) knocked the new nest to the ground before construction was complete.
