Field Notes
Description:
Philippines is listed as the Type Locality for this ant - https://www.antwiki.org/wiki/Polyrhachis...
Habitat:
Spotted in our front garden on an Insulin Plant (Chamaecostus cuspidatus). I usually like to research the common names of plants in the Philippines, but this time, I cannot find a Philippine common name for C. cuspidatus. For this plant, it seems that the English common name, Insulin Plant, is generally used here. When I was searching online, I was frequently directed to sources which said that this plant is called "Tabubungiaw" in the Philippines. My wife said that this name might be from the Bisayan language. So, a little more research revealed the problem. C. cuspidatus (Insulin Plant) is a spiral plant, well known, in herbal medicine, for its ability to help the body produce insulin. "Tabubungiau" is the Common Name in the Bisayan language for a Ginger Plant, which is also a spiral plant, Costus speciosus, and studies have suggested that it may have some antidiabetic properties. All slightly confusing, especially with two different spellings of the common name, but now I know. All of the correct plant information was found in - http://www.stuartxchange.org/InsulinPlant and http://www.stuartxchange.org/Tabubungiau.html
