Field Notes

Description:

Small birds with bright orange bill. Head, throat and upper chest were grey. Eyes were black with a streak running down like a tear-drop. The orange (chestnut) cheeks suggest that this bird is male.
Wing feathers were speckled and tail had black and white bars like a zebra.

Habitat:

Spotted on open grasslands-sheep and cattle country.

Distribution:

Notes:

Formerly known as Poephila guttata. These cute, active little grassfinches are very common, occurring throughout Australia.
They appeared to be nesting in a prickly acacia shrub nearby and wee flying in and out of there. Very small and difficult to photograph in windy conditions. Females were are around as well and they are said not to have chestnut cheeks.
Were seen with Bicheno's finches and wrens.
