Field Notes

Description:

I was flying towards the mountains at about 9,500' when I saw this huge flock of birds heading southwards. I followed them, gradually catching up and saw that they were White Storks, possibly migrating. Eventually they stopped to climb in a thermal and I caught up with them but could not join them as they were entering the restricted airspace to the north of Madrid Airport. This is the first time I have seen Storks at this height although they have been reported at up to 15,750'.

Habitat:

Flying over the plain but heading towards the "Systema Central" mountain range. They will have to go higher when the reach the Sierra Nevada range, or go round it.
