Description:

Same place and time as the previous one but has a different underwing pattern.

Habitat:

Pinewoods on mountainside at about 5,000'.

Yes, a few in his series of Argynnis sp. look a bit bluish... in that case maybe from the flower?

There were quite a few flying around, this one settled momentarily before flying off again and I saw nothing of the top. Just wonder if the blue might be a reflection of the deep blue sky?

It's back to the start than Malcolm! Was the dorsal view orange with black markings, or you can't be sure?

Daniele, I did an auto white balance and the spots stayed blue so I adjusted manually until the picture was very yellow but they still retained the blue tint so I guess they really are blue!

They looked similar but the spots I cannot say yet, will check the white balance on the original in the morning. There were lots of these fluttering about but these are the only shots I got - we had a lot of climbing to do!

Provided the upperwing was similar to your last one and those spots are actually whitish and not blue, we could have A. aglaja, addipe or niobe... a hard call to make :-)
