Field Notes

Description:

While planting trees in our backyard last night, we encountered (accidentally killed an individual) clutch of snake eggs. I am guessing (common in our region + due to the pattern) that this is a black rat snake but it could be a prairie kingsnake as well. We re-packed the eggs in soil in a 5-gallon bucket and are eagerly awaiting their emergence!

Habitat:

Pasture land in NE OK, outskirts of Collinsville, OK to be exact.

Unfortunately, they did not make it. I re-buried them in the soil in a 5-gallon bucket and after about a week of no activity, I moved away the soil and saw that the eggs were stinky and deflated, as though they had been crushed (very gooey, not like deflated as in the snakes hatched). :-(
Looks like your clutch is very close to hatching. I'm sorry you accidentally busted one open, but thank you for setting up the others so they can succeed in hatching. I look forward to seeing which species they are. I can't tell from the one in your hand.
