Field Notes

Description:

This nest was built inside a birdhouse. Besides the usual pine needles, grass and twigs, this nest also contained pieces of plastic grocery bags and a snake skin! I thought at first that maybe the snake came after the nest was built and then shed, but the bird clearly used the snake skin during construction because pieces of it are woven in.

Habitat:

Suburban back yard, wooden bird house mounted on a pole in open lawn area

Jemma, I just looked through the "popular" spottings in the mission and there are so many amazing, interesting and beautiful spottings. Here's one of my favorites: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7706362
Amazing fact!! Ava,this one is probably one of the most interesting spottings for your mission!!
It might be a Great Crested Flycatcher. As FaredinAliyevski says, they build a nest with snakeskin to deter predators, and they are cavity nesters.
This species were posted about a week ago. It's a flycatcher species that builds the nest using snake skin, check the link: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153123193295603&set=pb.10150120463815603.-2207520000.1377013963.&type=3&theater
