Field Notes

Description:

I could hear frogs but all I could find were tadpoles. Approximately 24mm long. They seemed to have small black markings on a dark grey body.

Habitat:

In a shallow granite rock pool in state park forest.

Notes:

Thanks Ashley for suggestions. Sound proved to be the key. These adults hide under rocks and logs near water while the tadpoles cruise around in nearby shallow ponds. Adult appearance is extremely variable. The incessant "crick crick crick crick crick"... can be heard here http://frogs.org.au/frogs/species/Crinia/signifera/

Great! I went and looked up all the frogs in your area, then looked up the tadpoles for all of them. Those two were the closest, so glad it was one of the two :)
Brilliant Ashley. Crinia signifera is exactly the call I heard at this pond. And the description fits and explains why I didn't see the frogs but found the tadpoles. Tadpole description is spot on.
Check out these two, let me know what you think. Crinia signifera and Pseudophryne bibroni
