Field Notes

Description:

With a wingspan of about 9 cms, this beautiful Monarch butterfly was flitting amidst wattle trees and frequently landing on the grass. The fore wings appeared longer than the hind wings, a bright orange colour with dark veins and white specks along the outer margins.
Underwings were paler with dark veins

Habitat:

Spotted along a river bed in East Central Victoria- feeding on Mimosa flowers.

Notes:

Caterpillars feed on all species of the Apocynaceae family.
This butterfly wouldn't settle for more than a few seconds and when it did, it only partially opened it's wings. So, not able to tell the gender.
Found in most continents. Also called "Wanderer".
