Field Notes

Description:

Usia sp. is the genus of Diptera that gives its name to the Usiinae subfamily in the family Bombyliidae. The bombyliidae are flies that are characterized by their long, pointed proboscis to sip the nectar from the flowers, where it is often found. Usia, a genus with various species which specialists sometimes can differentiate, is a fly of wide, shiny black body, with golden base of the wings and some hairs. Although its pointed horn looks as a stinger, it is harmless. In the image we see it installed in a blue flax flower, sipping their nectar and pollen-filled.

Habitat:

Pine tree forest. Parque Nacional de Sierra de Guadarrama
